Delicious Kale Chips

Delicious Kale Chips

Chips (or crisps as they say here in Britain) used to be a staple at my house. The pre-packaged kind and not very good for you. A few years ago I looked for alternatives and stumbled upon delicious kale chips. I was not convinced it would make good chips but I was wrong! I made slightly salted kale chips and they were amazing! Now, these chips are a staple at our house. Try this delicious kale chips recipe:

They are easy to make. You either can use a dehydrator or if you don’t have one like me you can easily make them in an oven. I made these kale chips a few times for friends and everyone loved them. I haven’t found a good way to store them yet, but then they usually don’t survive long enough to be stored.

Personally, I just always make small batches which will be eaten immediately and that has taken care of the storage problem.

You can make them with different flavours. I like simplicity and usually go for just slightly salted kale chips. But I have seen them with vegan cheese before as well. Try different ones and let us know in the comments what you liked!

To make these yummy kale chips you really only need 3 ingredients:

  • 1 bunch of kale
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • salt (to taste)

I have a small kitchen so can’t really justify getting a dehumidifier to make these kale chips. But luckily you can easily make them in the oven. You just want to be careful and don’t burn them. So the best is to slowly dehydrate them in the oven – best with the oven door slightly ajar on low heat. It will take a while and depending on your oven it may be a bit faster or take a bit longer. When you make these the first time be careful and check a few times. They burn pretty fast if the temperature is too high or you leave them in the oven for too long.

Still I think it is worthwhile, the kale chips are crsipy and so delicious all of my friends absolutely loved them. They make a great party food if you want to serve up a healthier alternative.

How To Make Delicious Kale Chips

It is actually really easy but may take some practice to get right. First, you want to preheat your oven to 120 degrees F (50 degrees C). While the oven is preheating, line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Take the kale and remove leaves carefully from the stem. The stem is a bit chewy so you don’t want that in your chips. I recommend keeping it if you want to juice it or use it in a different recipe. Tear the leaves in bite-size pieces and wash them thoghoughly in a colander.

Once cleaned dy the kale on a kitchen towl. This is easily down by placing all the kale on the kitchen towl and just pressing the kitchen towl firmly on the kale to remove the water.

When the kale is dry you can put it on the baking sheet with the parchment paper. Drizzle some olive oil over the kale and season it with salt to your liking.

Place the baking sheet on the middle tray in your oven and dehydrate the kale slowly with the door of your oven slightly ajar. This will take about 30 minutes to 45 minutes but it is a much healthier way of making kale chips then when you bake it at a high temperature.

Check that the kale chips are crispy. They may need a bit longer depending on your oven. When you are happy with the crispiness take them out of the oven and leave them to cool.

I like to serve them in a small bowl and eat them soon after being taken out of the oven. They will lose their crispiness if you keep them for too long.
